Borderline Cases: Pictures that enlighten and words that decieve
In this project we were given 5 essential questions about child immigration and we had to answer one of them with a drawing.
The 5 Essential Questions:
1) Why do people immigrate to other countries?
2) What are the challenges they might face when entering a new country?
3) What is the difference between acculturation and assimilation?
4) What things are essential or necessary to achieve success in the U.S.?
5) Is there an American Dream? Is it for everyone?
This made me realize how corrupt El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras is, the risks and lengths people take to lie a better life and what happens in their life before the journey.
Project reflection:
Essential Question: Is there an American Dream? Is it for everyone?
I drew a pair of eyes. If you view it from a certain perspective you can see that the eyes are open with doodles around it. This represents creativity, being open minded, and being aware of what is going on around the world. The American dream isn't what it seems. It isn't easy having a life here because to you have to do a lot to be successful. You have to go to college, pay taxes, rent and all that other stuff. It isn't as easy as getting a job, a family, and a house with a white picket fence and a dog.
If you view the eyes the other way, you can see that the eyes are closed and there is painted eyes on their eyelids and a tear running down their face. This represents lack of awareness, cluelessness, and hopelessness.
The American dream is what gives the immigrants hope. Unfortunately, they think it’s easy, but it’s not.
